02 / FIELD NOTES
Make your next
setup simpler.
Practical starting points for a connected trip.
No wall of jargon required.
Build your travel kit.
Pack your router, its power supply, a short Ethernet cable, and the cables your devices actually need. Configure your Wi-Fi name at home and check that everything connects before departure.
Open the checklist +
- Power the router with its supported adapter.
- Connect your phone and laptop to its Wi-Fi.
- Test your intended internet source.
- Save the admin address and recovery instructions.
- Pack an alternate way to get online.
One familiar network.
Where the property permits it, use the router to share the hotel connection with your devices. Complete any hotel sign-in first, then check a normal webpage before enabling your VPN.
Read the setup steps +
- Connect your phone to your travel router.
- Choose the hotel network in the router's repeater settings, or use the room's Ethernet connection.
- Complete the captive portal when prompted.
- Verify internet access, then test your VPN.
Portal behavior varies by hotel and router. Follow the property's network rules.
Plan beyond Wi-Fi.
A mobile connection can be a useful fallback when a room's internet is unreliable. Check your carrier's coverage, hotspot allowance, roaming costs, and device compatibility before relying on it.
Check your fallback +
- Confirm coverage at your destination.
- Check hotspot and roaming limits.
- Test switching connections before your trip.
- Keep the mobile device charged.
- Download important travel information offline.
03 / BEHIND THE TECH
Curious by nature.
Connected by choice.
@Hey, I'm Alex.
AlexRoamTech is where I share my interest in travel technology, networking, and the little devices that make a big difference on the road.
My toolkit spans the GL.iNet ecosystem—from travel routers to mobile and home networking devices. I've also participated in Mango and SIMPoYo 5G uFi beta testing, bringing a hands-on perspective to the gear I explore.
The goal is simple: help you understand your options, build a setup that fits your trip, and get more out of the tech you already carry.
